All artists have a favorite medium.
Some have paint.
Other have clay.
Some work in metal.
But only one works with paper pulp made using a proprietary method.
His name is Michael Lee Ford.
Michael Lee Ford is currently in a Texas prison serving a 35 year sentence for a 1989 robbery.
After hearing of the death of his mother in 1996, Michael was inspired to created a sculpture of Christ. Being in prison with no art supplies he followed the immortal words of Theodore Roosevelt who said “Do what you can where you are with what you have” and developed a method of turning newspaper back into paper pulp and then sculpting with it.
Although a welder by trade, Michael Lee Ford showed amazing aptitude for sculpting and has been creating ever since.
He has created over a thousand sculptures and has been featured in Juxtapoz magazine and Tattoo Savage as well as on the documentary Outside The Lines.
Typically less than nine inches tall, his sculptures convey an urgency and dynamic that is unusual in pieces so small. Some critics have likened his pieces to netsuke.
Inspired by music and life, Michael Lee Ford sculpts tirelessly, passing the years by creating beauty.
If you are interested in contacting Michael Lee Ford, he can be contacted by mail. Being in prison he can not receive e-mail or phone calls so mail is the only way to contact him. You must address your mail exactly as shown below or it will not reach him;
